A Weekend in Valencia. Hot springs, red-rock waterfalls, and Sunday flavors.
Just a short drive from Dumaguete, the mountain town of Valencia offers a refreshing break from the city heat. Between its steaming sulphur vents, red-tinged waterfalls, and laid-back Sunday market, it’s one of those places where nature and small-town charm meet perfectly.
Sulphur Springs & Red Rock Hot Springs
Valencia sits on the slopes of Mount Talinis, a geothermal zone where the earth literally breathes. Along the road to Pulangbato, you’ll see sulphur vents puffing white steam from the rocky hillsides, it smells a little like rotten eggs but looks otherworldly.
Nearby is Red Rock Hot Springs, a warm natural pool fed by the same underground heat. The water sits around 38 °C - perfect for soaking after a long day. There are cottages, showers, and a small café for snacks. Best time to visit: late afternoon, when the light hits the red hills around the springs.
Pulangbato Waterfalls
Just a few minutes away, the Pulangbato (“Red Rock”) Falls live up to their name. Iron and sulphur in the rocks give the cliffs a deep reddish color, framing the twin cascades that tumble into a cool basin. The air smells faintly of minerals, and the scenery feels untouched.
It’s an easy half-day trip, you can swim, take photos, and grab lunch at the small eateries near the entrance. Bring water shoes and a dry bag; the rocks can be slippery.
The Valencia Sunday Market
Every Sunday morning, the town plaza turns into a bustling open-air market filled with locals, expats, and travelers. Expect a mix of farm produce, fresh flowers, and homemade food from all over - from Filipino taho and lugaw to Vietnamese banh mi, sourdough sandwiches, and even German sausages.
Come early (around 8 a.m.) before the crowd builds up. It’s not just about the food, the market has a warm, community vibe, with live music, kids playing, and everyone greeting each other over breakfast. Bring a tote bag, small change, and an empty stomach.
Mango Ranch Waterpark
If you’re traveling with family or just want a fun cooldown, the Mango Ranch Waterpark nearby is worth a stop. It’s one of the largest in the province, with slides, pools, and shaded cabanas for lounging. The on-site restaurant serves grilled seafood, pork barbecue, and cold drinks, simple, hearty, and perfect after a morning at the falls.
